Shumi Akhtar

Associate professor

University of Sydney Business School

Shumi Akhtar is an associate professor at the University of Sydney Business School. Her research publications have appeared in leading international and Australian peer-reviewed journals. Akhtar has received a number of highly competitive external research grants, and regularly attends, presents and chairs sessions at top financial economic conferences, including the American Finance Association, American Economic Association, European Financial Management Association and Asian Finance Association. A number of her research papers received local and international awards. Akhtar was visiting scholar at Harvard, MIT and Stanford among others. She was invited to share her expert opinion before the Australian Parliamentary Senate Inquiry on Tax, International Trade and Investment and her recommendations were implemented. Akhtar's research scholarships have been recognised by the Australian Research Council, US-Australia Fulbright and Oxford University Fellowship/Scholarship.

Pieter Bierkens

Pieter Bierkens is Commonwealth Bank of Australia’s Interest Rate Benchmark Reform Lead. In his current capacity he coordinates the Bank’s preparation for the global reform of interest rate benchmarks. He has been based in Sydney since 2014. 

Previously, Pieter was Head of Markets of Commonwealth Bank in New York. Prior to Commonwealth Bank, he worked for 10 years in New York and London, where he started his career advising institutional investors on global fixed-income markets. 

Pieter holds a degree in Economics from Erasmus University in Rotterdam and a Master degree in International Affairs from Columbia University in New York. He is a Chartered Financial Analyst and holds the Financial Risk Manager designation.

Michael Blayney

Michael has over 20 years’ investment management and consulting experience and joined BTIM from First State Super, where he was Head of Investment Strategy since January 2014. In this role, Michael was responsible for the establishment of an active asset allocation process and led the Fund’s Investment Strategy Team. Prior to this appointment, Michael was Head of Diversified Strategies at Perpetual for over five years, with portfolio management responsibilities for the manager’s range of diversified funds. Michael’s prior experience includes over 10 years in consulting roles at Watson Wyatt (now Willis Towers Watson) and NSP Buck.

Craig Butterworth

Craig joined Droit as Chief Commercial Officer in July 2021. He is a member of the executive leadership team and is responsible for leading the firm’s commercial strategy.

As such, he is accountable for driving growth across core and adjacent businesses, as well as expanding its client base, partnerships and geographic footprint.

Prior to joining Droit, Craig was most recently Global Head of Sales and Account Management at Symphony, where his focus was on leveraging his deep industry and digital transformation experience to partner with Symphony’s clients to help them extract the most from the platform.

Prior to Symphony, Craig was Managing Director and Global Head of Client Ecosystem at Nomura. This was a business-led, front-to-back digital transformation programme aimed at breaking down internal silos - both technological and structural. Sub-projects of the programme included: 1) Symphony; 2) Salesforce; 3) Client Lifecycle Management; 4) Client Data Architecture; 5) Natural Language Processing Voice-to-text/ Soft Turrets; 6) Intelligent Advisor Dashboard.

Craig has over 20 years’ experience in Capital Markets having previously held Head of Sales Roles at RBS, State Street and RBC. Craig is passionate about mentoring, career guidance and talent development. He was Chair of the Global Markets EMEA Graduate Steering Committee at both Nomura and RBS.

Craig started his career at Goldman Sachs after receiving a BSc (Hons) in Economics from the University of Warwick. He is an accomplished racing driver, having won number of championships in karts and cars since he started racing at 10 years old.

Craig is married with two children and lives in the Essex countryside.

Rahoul Chowdry

Rahoul was appointed to the AMP Limited Board as a non-executive director in January 2020. He is a member of the Remuneration, Nomination, Audit and Risk Committees and was appointed as Chairman of the Risk Committee in May 2020. At the same time, he was appointed to the AMP Bank Board and is a member of its Audit Committee and the Chairman of the Risk Committee.

Rahoul has over 40 years’ experience in professional services, advising complex multinational organisations in Australia and overseas.

He is currently a Senior Advisor at Minter Ellison and is a member of the Audit and Risk Committee of the firm’s Partnership Board. Between January 2018 and June 2021 he was Partner and National Leader of Minter Ellison’s financial services practice in Australia and leader of the risk consulting practice. Prior to this, Rahoul was a Senior Partner at PwC for almost 30 years, where he undertook a number of leadership roles, delivering audit, assurance, and risk consulting services to major financial institutions in Australia, Canada and the United Kingdom.

Elliot Clarke

Reshma Devi

Reshma is the Women in Leadership Program Lead at Australian Women in Security Network (AWSN) and the AWSN Chapter Lead for Melbourne. Reshma was the finalist in Women in Security Awards in 2020 for People’s Choice Award in IT Security, and was nominated for Best Student Security Leader, AWSN Award for 2020, Australia’s most outstanding Women in Protective Security/Resilience and The One to Watch.

In 2021, she was awarded the Best Volunteer in Australian Women in Security Awards. In 2022 she has be nominated for the Unsung Hero award.
Reshma is a Thrive Coach, she coaches women transitioning between careers and is passionate about helping students with mentoring and guiding careers in Technology and STEM. Her passion has led her into assisting women in leadership roles and working on many women led initiatives.

Karl Eisenhammer

Karl Eisenhammer oversees Moody’s ESG Solutions for Australia and New Zealand. He is responsible for a team focused on delivering ESG solutions across ESG Measures, Climate Solutions, SME Solutions, Index Solutions and Sustainable Finance to a client universe across corporates, FI, NBFI and government. The Sustainable Finance offering at Moody’s ESG Solutions also includes the provision of Second Party Opinions and Sustainability Ratings to potential debt issuers in both bond and bank loan markets. Karl has almost 20 years’ experience as a corporate coverage banker across a variety of industries. Having started his career with ANZ he transitioned to Bank of America in their Global Corporate and Investment Banking team where he embraced the universal banking model. Karl has had broad exposure to all traditional banking products and capital markets including more recently in sustainable finance and carbon offsets. Karl holds a Bachelor of Economics from WSU as well as a Post Graduate Diploma of Environmental Management from UNSW.

Katrina Ell

Katrina Ell is an assistant director and economist in the Sydney office of Moody’s Analytics. Katrina manages the Asia-Pacific edition of Economy.com and is responsible for the research, analysis and forecasting of economies throughout the Asia-Pacific region, with a particular focus on Australia and New Zealand. Katrina is regularly quoted by international media such as CNBC, Bloomberg, the Wall Street Journal, Financial Times and Sky News. She previously worked as an analyst at the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority. Katrina received her bachelor’s degree in economics (honours) from Macquarie University and is currently completing her Masters in Applied Economics at Macquarie University.

Felicity Emmett

She is responsible for analysis and forecasting of key Australian macroeconomic indicators, as well as thematic research on the Australian economy. She also provides specialist analysis on topical issues, including the housing sector and the policy outlook. Felicity publishes regular and ad-hoc reports and presents to internal and external, domestic and international clients. She also provides regular media commentary on key local economic issues.
Felicity has more than twenty years’ experience as an economist in financial markets. Prior to joining ANZ, Felicity worked as a Senior Economist for the Royal Bank of Scotland, a Senior Economist at ABN AMRO Australia, and as an Economist for BZW Australia.

Bill Evans

William (Bill) H. Evans is a graduate of Sydney University (BEc. Hons I and University Medal) and the London School of Economics (M.Sc.), where he was a Commonwealth Scholar. He has worked as a Research Manager for the Reserve Bank of Australia, Treasurer at the Commonwealth Bank of Australia, and prior to joining Westpac in 1991, was Director and Head of Financial Markets at Schroders Australia Limited for 8 years.

Bill joined Westpac in 1991 in the position of Chief Economist and Head of Research. During his time at Westpac he has also spent 2 years in New Zealand as Head of the Institutional Bank with responsibility for Westpac’s corporate and financial markets businesses.

He is currently Managing Director Economics. He is the Bank’s economic spokesman and is responsible for all of the Bank’s economic research. Bill travels frequently, advising Westpac’s customers on the Australian economy and financial markets. He has developed many important contacts in the U.S, Europe and Asia.

Bill was Chairman of the Australian Business Economists for eight years and is now a life member.

She has more than 15 years experience as a responsible investment and sustainability professional. Kristy is the inaugural Executive Officer of ASFI. Established following the collaborative effort to develop the Australian Sustainable Finance Roadmap, ASFI works to create a financial system in Australia that can support a sustainable, resilient and prosperous future for all Australians. By working across the finance sector, with government, regulators, research institutions and peak bodies, ASFI drives implementation of the Australian Sustainable Finance Roadmap.

With a background in sustainable finance and impact investing across the public and private sectors, prior to ASFI Kristy led the Australian Government’s work with private and institutional investors to mobilise capital for climate and social impact in Australia, Southeast Asia and the Pacific. In this role she established the Australian Government’s first impact investment fund, designed to build sustainable and inclusive financial markets in Southeast Asia. She was also a special advisor on the Prime Minister’s Social Impact Investing Taskforce in 2020. She has previously worked in Australia, Latin America, the UK and in global roles for large and small organisations, driving global progress on sustainability issues. Manish Jayswal

Sidharth Kamani

He currently works for a multilateral development bank founded by the Governments of the BRICS countries. Prior to this he worked for Goldman Sachs as a risk associate in the Market risk and Treasury divisions.

He has knowledge of advanced risk concepts such as debt sustainability analysis, country risk, macroeconomic scenario analysis, stress testing, capital planning, credit risk pricing, sensitivity analysis and VaR, among others. He has hands-on experience in various risk regulations such as CCAR, FDSF, LCR and NSFR.

Kamran Khan

Kamran Khan is Deutsche Bank’s Head of ESG for Asia Pacific. In this newly established client-facing role, he is responsible for defining and executing the bank’s ESG strategy across all business divisions in Asia. He is a member of the Global Sustainability Council of Deutsche Bank.


Prior to joining Deutsche Bank, Mr. Khan established Infra-Tech Capital, an impact fund investing in companies utilizing technology to provide infrastructure services and achieve UN Sustainable Development Goals. He was also appointed by the Obama White House to serve as the head of global investments and operations at the US Millennium Challenge Corporation, where he managed a USD 10bn portfolio and led a USD 1.5-2bn annual investment program globally.


Previously, Mr. Khan held senior executive roles at the World Bank and helped establish the World Bank Group regional hub in Singapore, comprising the World Bank, International Finance Corporation (IFC) and Multilateral Insurance & Guarantee Agency (MIGA). Prior to his time at the World Bank, Mr. Khan worked on M&A transactions and advisory mandates at JP Morgan and LEK. He also served as a US Foreign Service Officer with the US Agency for International Development (USAID), where he led operations for the project finance and guarantees facility.


Mr. Khan served as an Advisor on Infrastructure Finance to APEC, ASEAN, and the G-20. He is a member of the Senior Advisory Board at Fudan University Fintech Centre in Shanghai with a mandate to advise on Belt and Road Initiative projects. He has also served on the Board of Advisors at a variety of market-leading companies using technology to achieve ESG goals. He is a frequent speaker at events such as World Economic Forum, ASEAN Summit, APEC Summit, and in major international media.


Mr. Khan holds an MBA from the Booth School of Business at University of Chicago, and an MS in Applied Economics and Master of Government Administration from the University of Pennsylvania. He received his BS in Economics from George Mason University.

Emma Murphy

Su-Lin Ong

Su-Lin Ong is a Managing Director of RBC Capital Markets, Chief Economist & Senior Relationship Manager. She has led the Economics & Fixed Income Strategy team for AU/NZ since 2010 and was Head of AU Research, including oversight for equity research, from 2015 to 2019.  In August 2019, she began a newly created role to help foster senior relationships with RBC’s key clients.

Su-Lin is part of the global strategy team with primary responsibility for formulating and presenting RBC’s AU/NZ macroeconomic outlook, cash rate view and bond yield forecasts. Based in RBC’s Sydney office, she works closely with sales and trading across fixed income, currencies, and equities in Australia as well as key RBC offices across the globe. Prior to joining RBC in 1998, Su-Lin was a fixed income economist for Hambros Bank and before that worked as an economist at the Department of Prime Minister & Cabinet in Canberra.

She is a former Director of Business Spectator and the NSW/ACT FINSIA Regional Council.  Su-Lin is an Executive Member of The Australian Business Economists, CEDA’s Economic Policy Committee, and sits on the Women in Banking and Finance Board. Helen Rowell was appointed as Deputy Chair of APRA in November 2015, and reappointed for a further five-year term from 1 July 2018.

Mrs Rowell joined APRA in 2002 as General Manager, Industry Technical Services and held a number of senior roles, including General Manager, Diversified Institutions Division, General Manager, Policy Development and Executive General Manager, Supervisory Support Division prior to her appointment as APRA Member, with primary responsibility for superannuation, from 1 July 2013. As of July 2021, Helen is responsible for insurance and in April 2022, she added the cross-industry portfolio to her responsibility.

Mrs Rowell was the Chair of APRA’s (cross-divisional) general insurance industry group from 2006 to 2011, and has represented APRA on the Financial Security Board’s Supervisory Intensity and Effectiveness Group and was previously co-Chair of the Joint Forum Financial Conglomerates Committee. Mrs Rowell is currently the APRA representative on the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development’s Working Party on Private Pensions, and was appointed President of the International Organisation of Pension Supervisors in November 2019.  Helen has also represented APRA on various sub committees of the International Association of Insurance Supervisor (IAIS) and since 2021, sits on the IAIS Executive Committee and has also been appointed as the IAIS Diversity, Equality & Inclusion champion.

Prior to joining APRA, Mrs Rowell was a partner at the international consulting firm Towers Perrin; she is also a Fellow and past President of the Institute of Actuaries of Australia.
